Applying the Global Ecosystem Typology Framework to assess coastal biomes of Atlantic Forest, Brazil

image
Project Description

Within the marine-freshwater-terrestrial realm, the coastal biomes of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest are under-mapped, under-studied and under threat. By exploring and mapping cross-scale interactions of biotic and abiotic drivers, this work will seek to provide a fundamental understanding of ecosystem services and natural capital of ecosystem functional groups (e.g., coastal river delta, intertidal forest and scrubland (i.e., mangroves), and coastal saltmarshes and reedbeds), of the study area. This work will document the presence and health of the focal ecosystem functional groups and investigate methods to evaluate ecosystem services.

Project Specific Training

The student will be trained to collect and work with a wide range of landscape ecology data sets to explore ecosystem-scale processes. It is expected that there will be one-to-one instruction by supervisory team, training via external partner project partners, as well as cohort-training by the DTP.

Potential Career Trajectory

This project will support the development of systems thinking applicable for both academic and professional sectors.
